Does originality truly exist, or are we just rearranging stuff?

Yea, originality still exists, I believe, but it only happens once in a while. We pretty much are mostly rearranging stuff.

This might not make sense, but it's making sense to me right now.
So, we're sort of in the business of common sense. Maybe what we often see produced isn't originality, but previously undiscovered/forgotten familiarity. Those moments when as an audience, we say, "Oh, yeah. ok. Cool, I guess." I think that's the result of rearranging.
To Justin's point, really original shit comes around only once in a while. It's f-ing hard to reinvent and then sell the wheel to a client. Their checkbooks are viciously guarded by the hounds of familiarity and safety.
Haha. What the shit am I even talking about? Have a good weekend.

I had one of those mid-stream epiphanies whilst pissing last night. I realized that nothing will ever be original. Things will be innovative. Old ideas will come from new thinkers. Kind of like that "If you haven't seen it, its new to you" tagline NBC used. That pretty sums it all up. But not limited to seeing.

Jean Baudrillard. Read 'Simulacra'. Nothing is ever invented. When Picasso visited the paintings at the caves of Lascaux (sp?), France, he exclaimed, "We have invented nothing!"

And that was Picasso. What chance do I have?

Yet, despite the jangly guitar of Peter Buck in early REM being an almost direct copy of the Rickenbacker strum of The Byrds, it impacts me in an entirely new way. And isn't that what's important?

Vanilla Ices song went don don don da da don don
Queens went don don don da da don da

Very similar but ultimately two original masterpieces
