So I started watching Mad Men, albeit a year late. Do you think we’re in a better decade to be in advertising, or was the 60’s a better time? Why?

I don't know what you're talking about. I keep a stiff drink in my hand all day, and my corner office has several pieces of furniture in it in case I want to pass out drunk and/or takes a model/my secretary in there and welcome her to the agency properly. Speaking of my secretaries, I've had to go through a number of them recently. They weren't covering up my inadequacy/affairs tactfully enough. Oh yeah, and our office just got a copying machine. And I hate my father.

I think it was probably pretty amazing to work in advertising in a time when new ideas were actually new - back when everything hadn't already been done (and been done back in the 60's, at that). You could still wow clients and creative directors with a straight headline and a photo of a smiling family. Not to mention have a drink at your desk at 10 in the morning.

Now.

With all due respect, I'd like to compare it to music from the 1960's and today. Sure, there were some amazing pioneers from that time and what they did was amazing. But we are smarter, better and do a hell of a lot more than they ever did.

It is also a lot harder to succeed today than it was back then. Today you have to have more than talent and I think that speaks volumes for the industry's evolution.
