I gotta hand it to Matt, Dan. It's your career that doesn't give a shit about your partner.
If your partner doesn't give a shit about your career, then you've got the wrong partner.
The time will come (hopefully) in which almost every team will be split up because of a great opportunity like becoming a CD or starting a family and moving/staying someplace. In that sense, your career doesn't give a shit.
Like it or not, your career and your partner's career are TANGENT. You don't have to be friends with your partner, but it helps. Either way, you manage more than ideas. It's up to both of you to be honest about where you, your work, or your life is headed.
This headline, though healthily defensive, is probably not the healthiest outlook on team dynamics. Maybe it should say:
"Your career doesn't give a shit about your partner. So keep an open dialog to ensure the inverse never happens."

TouchĂ©, Mr. Williams. And I totally agree with you (and Matt). My point — and I believe you know my point — was that you are the one and only manager of your career. Never trust anything that important to fate, faith, or the unspoken aspirations of others.

Oh, one other note: For one reason or another, I have loved each and every one of my past (and present) partners. They are some of the best people I have ever known, and I am honored to have worked with each of them

A good exercise might be to take a minute and ponder your partner's career and what conscious efforts you put into ensuring the health your relationship.

'Cause, don't be fooled, it IS a relationship.
