A good mentor is worth more than money or awards (and will probably help you get more of both).

Skill and talent can definitely get you places, but in order to be a true breakout, you must have connections.

If you know people who can pass on their wisdom to you, take them for all they're worth. It's beneficial for both parties. They get respect and admiration and you get knowledge. And if you hold on to that knowledge, later you can pass it on and get your own respect/admiration.
